Es un formato distinto al de los dilatadores Hegar. Donde un Hegar es una varilla gruesa de calibre uniforme, estas sondas son finas y rematan en un bulbo ensanchado: la varilla apenas ocupa, y es el bulbo del extremo el que marca el diámetro. La numeración del 1 al 12 corresponde a la progresión de calibres del bulbo.
El mango estriado da agarre y separa la mano de la zona de trabajo.
El acero inoxidable quirúrgico es no poroso, completamente liso y esterilizable, que es la razón por la que se usa en instrumental. El estuche mantiene cada sonda separada de las demás, evitando rayones en el pulido.

Cuidados
El acero inoxidable admite esterilización real, a diferencia de la silicona o el plástico. Pero admitir esterilización no es lo mismo que estar esterilizado: lavar con agua y jabón no esteriliza nada.
Lavar con agua caliente y jabón neutro, frotando toda la superficie, y enjuagar a fondo. Después hace falta un método de esterilización real. Inspeccionar cada pieza al detalle: cualquier rayón, muesca, picadura, mancha de óxido, doblez o irregularidad en el pulido inutiliza la pieza. En una varilla fina esto es especialmente crítico, porque una torcedura mínima no se ve a simple vista y cambia por completo cómo avanza la sonda. Secar por completo y guardar cada pieza en su sujeción, sin que rocen entre sí ni con otros objetos metálicos.

Twelve numbered steel pieces. The Rouge Rosebud set comprises twelve polished stainless steel sounds with slim shafts, bulbous tips and knurled handles, numbered 1 to 12, in a zippered case with individual retention.
This is a different format from Hegar dilators. Where a Hegar is a thick rod of uniform gauge, these sounds are slim and finish in a widened bulb: the shaft takes up almost nothing, and it's the bulb at the end that sets the diameter. The numbering runs with the progression of bulb gauges.
The knurled handle provides grip and keeps the hand clear of the working end.
Surgical stainless steel is non-porous, completely smooth and sterilisable, which is why it's used for instruments. The case keeps each sound separated from the others, preventing scratches to the polish.

Care Instructions
Stainless steel permits genuine sterilisation, unlike silicone or plastic. But permitting sterilisation is not the same as being sterile: washing with soap and water does not sterilise anything.
Wash with hot water and mild soap, scrubbing the entire surface, and rinse thoroughly. Beyond that, a real sterilisation method is required. Inspect every piece closely: any scratch, nick, pitting, rust spot, bend or irregularity in the polish takes that piece out of service. On a slim shaft this matters especially, because a minor bend isn't visible at a glance and completely changes how the sound travels. Dry completely and store each piece in its retention strap, not touching other pieces or metal objects.
